Japanese Plum and Clover

beneficial

Why this pairing

White clover fixes nitrogen and provides a living mulch under Japanese plum trees.

Practical considerations

White clover works well under Japanese plum trees as a living mulch, fixing atmospheric nitrogen through root nodules and reducing the need for supplemental fertilization. The pairing is most practical in the establishment phase, when the tree canopy is still open enough to let clover thrive. Once a Japanese plum reaches full canopy spread, shade density may suppress clover growth, particularly in wetter climates where low-light conditions favor grass competition instead.

Clover establishes quickly from seed broadcast in fall or early spring directly under the drip line. Avoid mowing shorter than 3 inches during the growing season to maintain nitrogen-fixing activity. The relationship becomes less useful on soils already high in available nitrogen, where clover's contribution is redundant and dense ground cover can compete with shallow feeder roots for moisture during dry stretches. On lean, sandy, or recently disturbed soils, the benefit is more pronounced.
