Companion pairing
beneficialLettuce + Cucumber
Plant together
Why this pairing
Lettuce shallow roots and cucumber deeper roots avoid competition. Lettuce can be undersown beneath cucumber trellises for late spring shade benefit.
Practical considerations
Lettuce and cucumber are a practical warm-season pairing, particularly in late spring when heat becomes a management problem for lettuce. Their root systems occupy different soil layers: lettuce stays shallow, cucumber pushes deeper, so direct competition for water and nutrients is minimal.
The most useful arrangement is undersowing lettuce beneath a cucumber trellis. As cucumbers climb and their canopy fills in, they cast dappled shade that extends the productive window for heat-sensitive lettuce varieties by two to three weeks. This works best in zones 6 through 8, where spring transitions to summer heat quickly enough to matter.
Spacing is straightforward: plant cucumbers at their standard 12-inch in-row spacing along the trellis, then sow lettuce loosely in the 12 to 18 inches of bed in front of the trellis base. Avoid dense lettuce patches that restrict airflow at soil level, which can encourage cucumber crown rot in humid conditions. The pairing has limited value in cool climates where shade is not needed and lettuce already has a long season.
