Companion pairing

beneficial

Lettuce + Carrot

Plant together

Why this pairing

Both prefer cool weather and consistent moisture. Lettuce shallow roots, carrot deep roots — no competition. Lettuce maturing first leaves space for carrot expansion.

Practical considerations

The pairing works because of complementary root architecture. Lettuce roots stay in the top 6 to 8 inches of soil; carrots push 8 to 12 inches deep, depending on variety. No direct root competition occurs, and both crops draw moisture from different layers of the soil column.

Timing is the practical advantage. Both prefer cool weather, making this combination most useful in spring (soil temps 45 to 65°F) and fall. Transplant lettuce alongside direct-sown carrots at the same time; lettuce reaches harvest in 45 to 60 days, well before carrots finish sizing. Removing spent lettuce opens the canopy and reduces light competition as carrots continue to fill out.

Soil prep should be optimized for carrots: deep-tilled, loose, free of stones or compaction. Lettuce tolerates these conditions easily, so there is no tradeoff in bed preparation.

The pairing is less useful in summer. Heat causes lettuce to bolt quickly, eliminating the succession timing benefit. In zones with prolonged warm periods, limit this combination to spring and fall plantings.
