Companion pairing

White Currant + Clover

Plant together

Why this pairing

Clover suits the partial shade white currants tolerate and supports a stable pollinator population during early bloom.

Practical considerations

White currants tolerate partial shade better than most small fruits, and clover exploits that same understory light level without competing aggressively for resources. The pairing works well when clover is seeded as a living mulch beneath or between currant rows, kept at a mow height of 4 to 6 inches to avoid shading low-hanging branches. White currant bloom opens early, often in late March or April depending on zone, and an established clover stand supports pollinator activity through that window reliably. Both plants prefer slightly acidic to neutral soil (pH 6.0 to 7.0), so no amendment conflict arises in typical garden soils.

The combination is less useful in heavy clay where clover struggles to establish, or in full-sun beds where white currants are already at their heat tolerance limit and the clover requires more frequent mowing than is practical. In those situations, a coarser groundcover or bare mulch beneath the currants will serve better.
