Companion pairing
beneficialRed Currant + Clover
Plant together
Why this pairing
White clover under red currants provides nitrogen and suppresses competing weeds during the long Ribes establishment period.
Practical considerations
Red currants and white clover pair well in established beds where weed pressure and nitrogen depletion are ongoing concerns. White clover (Trifolium repens) fixes atmospheric nitrogen through root-associated rhizobia, reducing or eliminating the need for supplemental nitrogen in years two through four of Ribes establishment. The low growth habit of clover (typically 4 to 8 inches) keeps it beneath the canopy without competing for light.
Time the clover seeding to the first or second spring after currant planting, once the shrubs are rooted and no longer vulnerable to moisture competition from a dense ground cover. In heavier clay soils where drainage is marginal, monitor carefully: clover retains moisture well and can contribute to crown rot conditions if water pools around the base of the canes. In well-drained loam or sandy loam, the pairing is reliably low-maintenance.
This combination is less useful in drier climates or during drought years, when clover may compete for moisture rather than contribute nitrogen. Mow or crimp the clover once or twice per season to keep it from setting heavy seed and crowding adjacent pathways.
