Sour Cherry and Tansy

beneficial

Why this pairing

Tansy reduces fruit fly pressure on tart cherries and discourages aphids.

Practical considerations

Tansy planted near sour cherry trees can reduce pressure from fruit flies and aphids, two recurring problems in tart cherry production. The pairing works best when tansy is established at the drip line rather than directly against the trunk, giving roots room without competing for moisture during fruit development. Both plants tolerate a range of well-drained soils, though sour cherries prefer slightly acidic conditions (pH 6.0 to 6.5) that tansy handles without complaint.

The benefit is most pronounced from bloom through harvest, when fruit fly populations peak and aphid colonies establish on new growth. Outside that window, tansy's contribution is largely cosmetic.

One caution: tansy spreads aggressively by both rhizome and self-seeding. In small garden settings it can outcompete groundcovers and become difficult to remove. Contain it with a root barrier or plan to cut flower heads before seed set. It is also toxic to livestock, so the pairing is unsuitable near grazing areas.
