Companion pairing

Cabbage + Mint

Plant together

Why this pairing

Mint volatile oils repel cabbage moth and many beetles. Grow mint in a sunken pot near cabbage to contain its aggressive spreading habit.

Practical considerations

Mint's volatile oils, particularly menthol and pulegone, deter cabbage moths and several beetle species that routinely damage brassicas. The pairing works best when mint is planted within 1 to 2 feet of cabbage, close enough for its aromatics to register but not so crowded that it competes for nutrients.

The catch is mint's aggressive rhizome system, which will colonize surrounding soil and crowd out neighboring plants if left unchecked. The practical fix is to sink a container into the bed and grow the mint inside it, restricting root spread while keeping the plant close. A 6- to 8-inch nursery pot buried flush with the soil surface works well for a season.

Soil and timing compatibility are favorable: both prefer consistent moisture and tolerate similar fertility levels. Start mint before transplanting cabbage seedlings so the volatile oil production is already established when the brassica is at its most vulnerable stage.
