Companion pairing
beneficialPole Bean + Summer Squash
Plant together
Why this pairing
Beans fix nitrogen for squash's heavy feeding. Squash leaves shade soil at the bean's base. Both prefer similar warm-soil culture and water.
Practical considerations
Pole beans and summer squash work well together in warm-season beds. Beans fix atmospheric nitrogen through root nodules, gradually releasing it into soil that squash, a notoriously heavy feeder, can draw on through the season. Squash's large leaves spread low and shade the soil at the base of bean plants, moderating soil temperature and slowing moisture loss during peak summer heat.
Both crops want soil temperatures above 60°F before sowing and share similar irrigation needs: consistent moisture without waterlogging. Time plantings so squash is direct-seeded at the same time as beans or a week later. Give each crop its full spacing requirement; crowding defeats the canopy benefit and invites fungal problems in humid climates.
This pairing is most useful in small plots where space efficiency matters and where soil nitrogen is limited. It is less practical when growing at scale, since squash vines can sprawl into bean rows and complicate harvest.
